In brief
Iranian news agencies report five blasts on Qeshm Island and sounds from the sea in Bandar Lengeh, with no known casualties. The cause remains unclear. A later report suggests the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps may be targeting vessels in the Strait, but confirmation is pending.
Explosions were heard early Tuesday on Iran’s Qeshm Island and in the coastal city of Bandar Lengeh, Iranian news agencies said, with no reports of casualties or damage.
The state agency IRNA counted five blasts on Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, while the semi‑official Fars news outlet reported sounds coming from the direction of the sea in Bandar Lengeh, in Hormozgan province.
Neither agency explained the cause, and neither provided details about injuries or destruction. The events are happening amid continued diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington over tensions surrounding the Strait, and follow a history of recent military exchanges in the region.
The US and Israel began attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, Tehran retaliated by targeting Israeli and US assets in the area, before a ceasefire agreement was reached in April. On June 18, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait, although implementation has stalled over security concerns.
Separately, a monitoring website reported that the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is launching anti‑ship cruise missiles or drones against vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with explosions heard southwest of Qeshm Island. This claim has not yet been confirmed by any official source.
