In brief
Amid ongoing violence, residents of Sumy face daily chaos and uncertainty following a tragic Palm Sunday attack.
Rescue workers in Sumy, Ukraine, are doing their best to manage the aftermath of a brutal missile strike that occurred on Palm Sunday, as the city's residents grapple with grim realities. A massive plume of black smoke rose from a burned-out parking lot filled with wrecked cars, while terrified locals sought refuge on a nearby sidewalk. The area was filled with emergency service vehicles racing to the scene, heightening the tension.“Shelter! shelter!” shouted one police officer as a distinct buzzing sound—reminiscent of a chainsaw—emerged from above. A Russian drone, similar to one that had already caused destruction moments earlier, was now overhead, prompting panic among the crowd. “It’s like this every day,” expressed Artem Kobzar, the mayor of Sumy, as he rushed to safety inside an apartment building. “Everyone in Ukraine desires peace, yet here in Sumy, we experience no respite day or night.” On Palm Sunday morning at 10 a.m., two ballistic missiles struck a central residential area of the city, claiming the lives of 34 civilians, including two children, while injuring another 117, according to the Sumy City Council. Although Russia claimed the missiles targeted military installations, local officials indicated that a military awards ceremony was underway during the attack. This incident follows failed ceasefire negotiations initiated by President Trump in a recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir V. Putin. The assault has raised concerns about an impending Russian ground offensive in the region, igniting fears among the local population as hopes for peace continue to dwindle.
