Australia recorded 299,903 registered births in 2025, a 2.6 % rise from the previous year, official data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Friday.

The total fertility rate edged up to 1.497 babies per woman in 2025 from 1.481 in 2024, but remained well below the threshold of 1.5.

Beidar Cho, ABS head of population statistics, said in a statement:

This is the third consecutive year the total fertility rate for Australia has been below 1.5 and is well below the 1.8 babies per woman seen a decade earlier in 2015.

Cho added that Tasmania had the highest fertility rate among the states and territories at 1.568 babies per woman, while the Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest at 1.283; all states and territories have seen declines over the past decade.

The fertility rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women stood at 2.234 babies per woman last year, with a total of 26,733 births registered among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, accounting for 8.9 percent of all births.
