In brief

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is reeling after the abduction and murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a member of the small local Jewish community, leading to the arrest of three Uzbek men believed to be involved in the crime.

The Emirati interior ministry announced on Monday that suspects Olimboy Tohirovich, Makhmudjon Abdurakhim, both 28, and 33-year-old Azizbek Kamilovich were apprehended in relation to this heinous act. The suspects, featured in handcuffs and blindfolded photos released by authorities, have not yet been linked to a specific motive, though Israeli officials have termed the incident as an act of antisemitic terrorism. Rabbi Kogan, aged 28, was reported missing last Thursday in Dubai, and his body was discovered on Sunday after his abandoned vehicle was located in Al Ain, near the Abu Dhabi border. As a dual citizen of Israel and Moldova, Kogan played an active role in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, known for its worldwide Jewish outreach, and managed a kosher supermarket in an upscale area of Dubai. In response to the murder, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act, labeling it “an abhorrent antisemitic terrorist attack.” Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE's ambassador to the U.S., also denounced the crime, calling it “a crime against the U.A.E.” As investigations continue, hopes remain for a swift forensic examination to allow the rabbi’s body to be returned to Israel for burial. The safety of the Jewish community in the UAE has come under scrutiny following this violent incident, which has sparked fears amid a backdrop of increasing Jewish presence in the region since the Abraham Accords were established in 2020. The UAE’s promotion of religious tolerance, highlighted by the inauguration of its first synagogue in February 2023, now faces challenges in light of this tragic event. As the investigation unfolds, the local and international communities remain vigilant for further developments regarding the motives behind this shocking act of violence.
