MADISON, Wis. (RTW News) — Jay Rothman, the President of the University of Wisconsin system, has revealed in a letter obtained by the press that he has been told to either resign or face termination. Notably, Rothman stated that he has not been provided with any reason for this ultimatum and insists he will not step down.

Since taking the helm of the multicampus university system, which serves around 165,000 students, in 2022, Rothman has faced various challenges including declining enrollment and budget constraints. The Board of Regents conducted an emergency meeting to discuss personnel issues this past Wednesday, but they opted to remain silent on the specifics of their discussions.

Rothman expressed his confusion regarding the board’s lack of transparency, stating he has not been afforded an opportunity for discussion. The Board is responsible for the leadership of the Universities of Wisconsin and is having discussions about its future, said Amy Bogost, the board president, while refusing to comment on personnel matters.

In his correspondence, Rothman has voiced his discontent with the situation, stating, I find this process to be nearly (if not completely) indefensible. He emphasized that he is unwilling to resign as a matter of principle, citing a lack of supportive reasoning from the board members.

Amidst the ongoing power dynamics, Rothman also highlighted the need for stability as the flagship campus prepares for a significant change in leadership with the upcoming departure of Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin.

In the face of these challenges, Rothman's commitment to his role remains steadfast as he challenges the board's actions and transparency surrounding their confidence in his leadership.
