Three people have been killed and at least 32 others injured in an overnight Russian air attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv, the city's mayor has reported.
Two high-rise residential buildings were struck during the assault, as reported by Vitali Klitschko on Telegram. Among the injured are six children.
In related news, Russian air defenses successfully intercepted a drone headed towards Moscow, as stated by the city's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
This bombardment is part of a troubling trend where Moscow has ramped up its attacks on civilian areas and energy infrastructures, especially with winter approaching. Ukrainian authorities have noted that nearly 1,200 drones were launched in the previous week.
The strikes that led to these casualties occurred in the Desnianskyi district of Kyiv, where a nine-storey residential building was hit, resulting in multiple injuries. Some victims are being treated in hospitals, including two children.
Since the onset of Russia's invasion in 2022, it currently occupies about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which was annexed in 2014. Despite continued fighting on the ground, there has been little movement along the front lines. Ukraine is actively targeting Russian military production facilities and vital oil facilities in an attempt to undermine Moscow's war efforts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated calls for long-range weaponry from allies to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities. Following unsuccessful discussions with U.S. and EU leaders, he aims to gather international support to maintain pressure on Russian forces.
This week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced new sanctions aimed at major Russian oil companies and expressed dissatisfaction with the state of negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding peaceful resolutions to the ongoing conflict.
In conclusion, the heinous attacks in Kyiv exemplify the ongoing pain and suffering caused by the war in Ukraine, drawing attention to the urgent need for diplomatic solutions and support from the international community.
