PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A tragic shooting incident unfolded on Brown University’s campus during final exams, resulting in two deaths and nine injuries. Law enforcement agencies, including hundreds of police officers, are actively searching the area for the gunman, who opened fire in a classroom on Saturday afternoon.

The attack occurred in the engineering building of the prestigious Ivy League school, which was filled with students preparing for final exams. Authorities are currently viewing video surveillance footage, and the suspect was seen dressed in black, calmly leaving the scene.

University President Christina Paxson confirmed that ten individuals injured were students. One additional person was hurt by fragments but was not identified as a student. The campus lockdown led to students sheltering in place for hours, with many escorted to safe locations.

As streets surrounding the campus fell quiet, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley urged residents to stay indoors until the situation was resolved, expressing the grief shared by the community. Local authorities believe a handgun was used in the incident.

Democratic Governor Dan McKee pledged to deploy all necessary resources to capture the shooter, emphasizing the state’s commitment to safety amidst its strict gun laws.

The shooting, described by witnesses as terrifying, coincided with exams in the Barus & Holley building, home to multiple laboratories and classrooms. One student recounted hearing gunshots before fleeing, while another, who had just finished her lab session, described being locked down in a gym until it was safe to leave.

As the university community grapples with the aftermath, students expressed their shock and fear regarding the safety of their campus, which is known for its rich history as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country.
