South Korea’s Korean Aerospace Administration (KASA) released images taken by its Danubri lunar orbiter that show the Moon’s surface after a segment of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket struck it at about 06:35 GMT on Wednesday, Aug 6, 2026.


The upper stage of the Falcon 9, the part of the rocket designed to be reusable, had been intended to detach in orbit and never reach the Moon. However, gravitational pushes from Earth, the Moon and the Sun over months shifted its trajectory, causing it to hit the lunar surface at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph (≈8,700 km/h).


The impact produced a brief flash and a small gouge, visible only in the high‑resolution satellite photos shared by KASA. According to SpaceX, the collision was unintentional. Engineers monitoring the event noted the debris did not pose a threat to Earth but highlighted the growing clutter of non‑functional objects in space.


Astronomer Matt Bothwell of the University of Cambridge warned that the increasing density of space traffic could eventually make traveling beyond Earth’s orbit extremely difficult. He emphasized the need for international cooperation on debris mitigation.
