ALAMEDA, Calif. — A tense confrontation at a U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda escalated late Thursday evening when law enforcement officers fired shots at a vehicle that reversed toward the base, which had earlier been a focal point for protests against federal immigration agents. The incident occurred shortly after President Donald Trump rescinded a planned increase of federal agents in San Francisco to tackle crime, a move that criticized was by local officials.
The Coast Guard reported that shots were fired around 10 p.m., with the vehicle speeding away unscathed and no injuries among the Coast Guard personnel. Video footage captured a U-Haul truck backing toward the base despite multiple verbal commands to stop. The Coast Guard stated that when the vehicle’s actions threatened the safety of personnel, officers used live ammunition.
The FBI is currently investigating the episode, with no immediate response available from their office. Earlier in the day, numerous protesters gathered at the base, singing hymns and waving signs that demanded protection for local residents and denounced the presence of federal immigration agents.
This incident reflects the heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the region, particularly following Trump’s previous warnings about deploying the National Guard to San Francisco, a suggestion that was met with resistance from Mayor Daniel Lurie and Governor Gavin Newsom, who argued that crime rates were already decreasing.
Trump decided to halt the federal deployment after discussions with the mayor and various business leaders, who claimed to be actively addressing issues in the city. Coast Guard Island, the site of the incident, is a secured area that does not permit public access without appropriate identification, and it has been home to Base Alameda since its establishment in 2012, providing critical support for Coast Guard operations along the West Coast.
