PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal immigration officers shot and wounded two individuals outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. This incident occurred just a day after a federal officer shot and killed a woman in Minnesota, raising questions about federal law enforcement practices.
The FBI's Portland office confirmed that it is investigating the shooting, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. Initial police reports indicated a shooting near the hospital, leading officers to respond. Minutes later, police received reports that a man injured in the incident was seeking help nearby. Upon response, officers found the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds and determined they had been injured in the altercation involving federal agents.
The conditions of both individuals have not been disclosed. Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney indicated that both victims were local residents, expressing hope for their recovery.
This incident can be seen as indicative of the ongoing tensions in a city known for its contentious relationship with federal immigration enforcement, especially following President Trump's recent confrontations regarding national support for law enforcement activities.
In a joint statement, local officials condemned the violence and called for the cessation of ICE operations within Portland during the investigation process. We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts, city officials stated.
As Chief Bob Day and the local administration urged the community to remain calm, they also highlighted the importance of upholding civil rights and the need for peace amidst rising frustrations about federal intervention in the city. Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley also called for peaceful protests and warned against falling into provocation by federal forces.
