Footage circulating on social media of federal officers detaining a distraught woman at San Francisco International Airport has ignited widespread anger from local officials, even as the incident was clarified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to be unrelated to the recent deployments of immigration officers.
The video shows Angelina Lopez-Jimenez being held down and allegedly handcuffed by officers while her child witnessed the ordeal. The DHS confirmed that the family was arrested due to an outstanding final order of removal to Guatemala from 2019.
State Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, hosted a news conference at the airport to denounce the federal actions, echoing sentiments from fellow Democratic candidates for California governor who expressed disapproval of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a statement, Wiener said, “We don’t want ICE here and when ICE descends on our communities, it only creates fear.” His comments were shared widely on social media, which has been rife with concerns regarding President Trump’s recent move to dispatch ICE agents to airports amid staffing shortages at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) due to government shutdowns.
While DHS clarified that the events at San Francisco International Airport happened prior to the deployment of ICE officers aimed at assisting TSA with lengthy security lines, the incident has nonetheless raised alarms in the community.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also weighed in, stating that the matter seemed isolated and not indicative of a more significant enforcement action, though he described the event as distressing.
Airport officials confirmed that ICE agents are not scheduled for San Francisco International Airport, owing to the fact that passenger screening is conducted through private contractors. Despite this, the airport remains watchful of any similar incidents, placing emphasis on the need to ensure community safety and humane treatment for all individuals.
The impact of this incident continues to ripple through discussions on immigration reform and community responses to federal enforcement tactics.
