Iranian security forces have violently arrested Nobel Peace Prize winner and women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi, her foundation has reported.

The Narges Foundation stated that Mohammadi, who is 53 years old, was detained in Mashhad along with other activists. The Nobel Committee has expressed deep concern over her arrest and urged Iranian authorities to clarify her whereabouts, ensure her safety, and release her unconditionally.

A prominent figure in fighting against female oppression in Iran, Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. She had recently been granted a temporary release from prison on health grounds before being taken back into custody.

Her latest arrest occurred while she was attending a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer whose recent death has prompted calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. Reports indicate that other activists were also detained during the memorial service.

Taghi Rahmani, Mohammadi's husband, described her arrest as violent and alleged that it was reminiscent of a crackdown on dissent in Iran. Activists have claimed that these actions are part of a broader pattern of political repression following recent protests.

Over the years, Mohammadi has faced numerous arrests, accumulating multiple prison sentences for her advocacy work. Despite the risks, she has remained defiant, speaking out against the Iranian regime and its treatment of dissenters.
