Nearly 90,000 people were ordered to evacuate as a large wildfire moved toward Reno, Nevada, threatening the outskirts of the city. The blaze, first reported Saturday morning at 11:15 local, has burned roughly 10,500 acres and remains uncontained.
Around 42,000 residents were told to leave immediately, while 45,000 more were urged to prepare for evacuation. Approximately 13,700 homes fall within the evacuation zone, with two shelters opened to accommodate displaced residents.
Wind and unpredictable weather conditions have accelerated the fire’s spread. Six people have been injured, three of them emergency responders fighting the flames.
Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and called in the National Guard to assist with firefighting and law enforcement operations. "This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials," he said.
All Washoe County schools will be closed Monday, except one, and mass road closures have been implemented. Reno, with a population of around 280,000, sits near the California border.
