COLUMBIA, S.C. — A mass shooting at a bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, resulted in four fatalities and 16 injuries. Sheriff P.J. Tanner revealed on Wednesday that the shooting, which occurred early on Sunday, stemmed from a dispute among individuals familiar with one another. Despite the presence of approximately 700 people at Willie’s Bar and Grill during the incident, law enforcement has yet to identify any suspects due to a lack of witness cooperation.
Investigators are currently analyzing ballistic evidence, footage from the scene, and conducting DNA tests in hopes of identifying the shooters. Tanner expressed disappointment, noting that witnesses have been reluctant to come forward, likely fearing retribution. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and reminded individuals that anonymous reporting options are available.
Those killed in the incident have been identified as Kashawn Glaze, 22; Chiraad Smalls, 33; Amos Gary, 54; and A’shan’tek Milledge, 22. Tanner described the scene as horrific, yet unsurprising given the size of the crowd and the indiscriminate nature of the gunfire. Authorities have confirmed that there were some 300 patrons inside the bar and approximately 400 outside when the shooting occurred.
Building a case is expected to take time as investigators rely on forensic evidence, and Sheriff Tanner emphasized the necessity of ensuring that any charges filed are sustainable in court. He underscored his intention to protect the victims' families from experiencing further trauma.
Willie’s Bar is known for its Gullah-inspired cuisine and serves as a community hub on the island, which is home to many residents of Gullah ancestry. The sheriff expressed his commitment to delivering justice for the victims and the impacted community.
