On Wednesday a jury was sworn in at a courtroom in Valletta for the trial of Yorgen Fenech, a 44‑year‑old businessman accused of complicity in the 2017 car‑bomb murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Fenech denies all charges, but prosecutors argue that he helped plan the killing of a BBC‑style journalist who exposed widespread corruption within Malta’s government and abroad.
The case is part of a wide‑scope investigation that has already seen the brothers George and Alfred De Giorgio sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2022, and the men Robert Agius and Jamie Vella jailed for life in 2025 for supplying the bomb. Vincent Muscat, who was also convicted, received a pardon in exchange for testifying.
Family members of Caruana Galizia, including three sons, witnessed the opening of the trial, reflecting the case’s emotional toll on the victim’s close associates.
Reuters reports that the proceedings could last several weeks and will shed light on a national crisis over political corruption and press freedom in Malta.
