On August 10, 2026, former Nonthaburi MP Chalong Reawraeng allegedly shot and killed former police officer Thongchai Yenprasert outside the official’s office on the northern outskirts of Bangkok.
Yenprasert, hit in the neck, died in hospital while his driver was wounded. After the incident, Reawraeng dialled and confessed the shooting to political pundit Anchalee Paireerak during a livestream on YouTube.
Policemen controversially granted the former MP a press conference at a station. During the briefing, which lasted more than six minutes, Reawraeng detailed his encounter with Yenprasert, citing accusations of a personal dispute and claiming the former officer’s aggression prompted the shoot.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul condemned the allowance of the press conference, describing the treatment of the accused as “shocking.” He pledged full legal action against Reawraeng and called for “strict enforcement” of gun laws.
Reawraeng stated he had no intent to kill, describing Yenprasert as a “good friend.” However, his comments were interpreted as a justification for violent action, and authorities are investigating the circumstances of the shoot.
The incident follows a mass shooting a week earlier in which a 14‑year‑old boy killed eight people and himself at a school and home. Thailand’s high gun ownership has prompted renewed debate about firearm regulations. Police are expected to enforce stricter checkpoints and tighten controls on firearms after the Prime Minister’s recent directives.
The murder and subsequent live confession highlight the challenges in policing former politicians and underline the urgency of tackling gun violence in Thailand.
