PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Family Planning, a network of medical clinics catering to low-income residents across the state, is set to close its primary care operations this Friday. The decision follows significant cuts made by the Trump administration affecting funding for abortion providers, including larger entities like Planned Parenthood.

Operating a total of 18 clinics that offer a mix of services, including cancer screenings and contraception, Maine Family Planning emphasizes that abortions constitute a small fraction of its overall services. However, the recent defunding has compelled the organization to shut down primary care services, eliminating access for many vulnerable patients.

George Hill, president of Maine Family Planning, stated that the decision to close primary care facilities has been devastating, particularly since many patients may struggle to find replacement healthcare providers. Telling those patients we can’t see them anymore has been devastating, Hill remarked. Some may find it too difficult to get a new provider and may just forego care altogether. The clinics served over 600 patients in primary care last year.

The network typically receives $1.9 million annually in Medicaid reimbursements. It recently informed roughly 8,000 patients about the upcoming closures.

Maine Family Planning fought to restore its Medicaid funding in federal court but suffered a setback in August when a judge ruled against the reinstatement during ongoing litigation. The organization is appealing to a higher court as part of this continued legal battle.

Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing Maine Family Planning, criticized the cuts as part of a broader strategy aimed at closing clinics even in states that uphold abortion rights. She reaffirmed their commitment to fight for the restoration of the clinic's crucial funding. This is part of a larger strategy to shut down clinics, Northup noted, emphasizing the impact on healthcare access for low-income populations in Maine.
