BOSTON (AP) — Larry Summers, the former president of Harvard University and U.S. Treasury Secretary, has announced his decision to withdraw from public commitments following the release of emails that depicted a continued friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, long after Epstein's admission to soliciting sex from a minor in 2008.
In a statement, Summers expressed his intention to step back in order to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the people closest to me. He added, I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused. I take full responsibility for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein. He did not specify what this retreat would look like but has committed to continuing his teaching roles as he seeks healing.
His announcement comes just days after President Donald Trump suggested via social media that the Justice Department and the FBI investigate Summers along with other prominent figures linked to Epstein, including former President Bill Clinton. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that a high-ranking federal prosecutor would lead the investigation.
Following Summers’ statement, the Center for American Progress confirmed that he would be leaving his fellowship position, and a spokesperson from the Budget Lab at Yale also indicated he would no longer be part of their advisory group.
Summers’ associated troubles follow revelations from emails shared this week, highlighting his interactions with Epstein even after the financier’s sentencing nearly 15 years ago. For instance, one communication from 2019 included Summers inquiring about a woman’s busyness, to which Epstein responded with his characteristic erratic spelling and grammar.
Senator Elizabeth Warren stated on CNN that Harvard should cut ties with Summers, citing his judgment as untrustworthy, particularly in relation to student interactions.
With the weight of past associations and ongoing scrutiny, Summers’ future public engagements remain uncertain as he aims to navigate the fallout from this tumultuous chapter in his career.
