Jackie, the celebrated bald eagle from California’s Big Bear Valley, died on Monday after weeks of veterinary care. The bird’s death comes after she suffered from anemia and significant weight loss following an attack by other eagles.
The Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation group, had been treating Jackie since the incident. Despite a team of veterinarians and specialist consultants, her condition continued to decline.
“We are heartbroken by this loss,” the center said. They emphasized the love and support from a global audience that followed Jackie’s journey on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, a livestreamed habitat that amassed hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
Jackie and her mate, Shadow, had been partners since 2018, as noted by the Friends of Big Bear Valley. Their bond and Jackie's resilience made her an online icon.
The center has handed Jackie's remains to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will provide a fuller statement with treatment and test details in the coming days. Her passing has deeply touched many people who had grown close to her story over the past year.
