ATLANTA (AP) — A man was arrested Monday at Atlanta's busy airport after his family tipped off authorities about his intentions to cause harm, revealing an alarming situation that was successfully thwarted.

Billy Joe Cagle, 49, was apprehended at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where police discovered an assault rifle and ammunition in his pickup truck parked outside. His family reported to local authorities that he had been livestreaming on social media, expressing plans to engage in a shooting at the airport.

Police Chief Darin Schierbaum praised the critical role of community awareness, stating, We’re here today briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something. Cagle, identified as a convicted felon, had traveled to the airport with a Chevrolet pickup truck containing an AR-15 and 27 rounds of ammunition.

Cartersville Police Captain Greg Sparacio emphasized Cagle's intent to inflict harm, noting the seriousness of the situation and the importance of the family's intervention. Surveillance footage and body-camera clips captured Cagle's arrival and subsequent arrest, providing a clear account of the swift police response.

Cagle faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He remains in custody as authorities determine how he obtained the weapon illegally.

In a statement, Mayor Andre Dickens expressed gratitude that a tragedy was avoided, crediting the family for their alertness. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed this sentiment, praising law enforcement for their quick actions that prevented potential harm.
