In brief
Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been temporarily released from prison for 21 days to recuperate after recent surgery to address serious health issues.
In a pivotal decision, Iranian prosecutors have permitted Narges Mohammadi to step outside imprisonment for a duration of 21 days, as announced by her foundation. This medical leave comes on the heels of an operation where a lesion suspected of being cancerous was removed from her leg. Mohammadi's lawyers had been tirelessly advocating for this necessary recuperation period, highlighting the deterioration of her health while incarcerated. Fellow inmates, alarmed by her condition, initiated a hunger strike to demand her release.Upon the completion of her recovery period, Mohammadi, aged 52, will face an extension of her sentence by an additional 21 days to compensate for the time spent outside prison. Her foundation, alongside family members, had sought a "medical furlough" that would not add to her prison time. Mohammadi is currently serving a lengthy sentence for "spreading anti-state propaganda," stemming from her vocal opposition to the Iranian government's policies, particularly those impacting women's rights. Her health has been a significant concern throughout her imprisonment, with reports of multiple heart attacks in 2022.In 2023, Narges Mohammadi was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, an honor accepted by her children in her absence as she continues to fight for human rights from her prison cell.
