Mourners gathered at a West Virginia high school this weekend to remember U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard member who was fatally shot last week in Washington, D.C. The vigil attracted a large crowd who celebrated her warm spirit and dedication to community service.

Beckstrom, just 20 years old, lost her life in an incident that also critically injured her colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. Recently honored at local vigils across West Virginia, Beckstrom was recalled by her school's principal, Jarrod Hankins, as a diligent student whose positivity and kindness inspired others.

According to reports, Beckstrom and Wolfe were deployed as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative aimed at combating crime in D.C. A 29-year-old Afghan national has been charged with Beckstrom's murder, provoking immediate political consequences, including a suspension of asylum decisions.

Amid the heartache, funeral arrangements are being coordinated as mourners wish to pay their respect to Beckstrom’s life, recognized for her courage and commitment to service. Governor Patrick Morrisey attended the vigil, describing Beckstrom as a “favorite daughter of Webster County,” and affirming her legacy will endure even in the face of such tragedy.

The community stands united in support, lighting candles and sharing stories during this challenging time, expressing gratitude for Beckstrom's lasting impact.
