One of the two members of the National Guard who were shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed.

Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, while the second National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, is reportedly 'fighting for his life'. Both were shot at close range near Farragut Square shortly after 2 PM EST on Wednesday. The police have arrested 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the suspected shooter.

During a Thanksgiving call with U.S. service members, President Trump confirmed Beckstrom's tragic passing, describing her as a 'highly respected, young, magnificent person.' He also reached out to her parents following the news.

Beckstrom, who enlisted in June 2023, was serving with the 863rd Military Police Company and had volunteered to work during the Thanksgiving holiday. Her death has drawn condolences from various figures, including Republican Senator Jim Justice, who expressed being 'absolutely devastated' at the news.

The shooting occurred in a busy area as both soldiers were on a high-visibility patrol. Since August, over 2,000 troops have been stationed in the capital to address public safety concerns. This incident has intensified discussions around security protocols given the location and nature of the attack.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the suspect, was previously known to have worked with U.S. forces in Afghanistan and had come to the U.S. under immigration protections following the withdrawal of U.S. troops. He faces multiple charges including assault with intent to kill while armed, and depending on the outcome of Wolfe's condition, could face more severe charges, including murder.

As the community mourns the loss of Sarah Beckstrom, prayers are also being offered for Andrew Wolfe’s recovery. This tragedy raises critical questions around the safety of National Guard members serving in domestic capacities.
