Arbel Yehud, an Israeli hostage, is emerging as a significant figure amidst the ongoing crisis surrounding the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Captured during the onslaught of October 7, 2023, Yehud was taken from her home in Nir Oz, a small community situated close to the Gaza border. At the time of her abduction, she was 28 years old, and her partner, Ariel Cunio, remains in captivity with her.
Yehud is currently recognized as the last confirmed female civilian hostage believed to be alive. Another woman, Shiri Bibas, was abducted along with her two young sons during the same assault. There are growing concerns for Bibas and her children, with Israeli military officials noting the distressing situation, despite no confirmations regarding their deaths.
Complicating matters further, Yehud's brother, Dolev, was initially reported missing and feared kidnapped, but it was established in June 2024 that he had not entered Gaza; his remains were recovered in Nir Oz and subsequently identified.
Under the cease-fire deal, Yehud was slated for release in the first groups on January 19 and 25, according to information from Israeli authorities. Notably, Israel emphasized the priority for releasing female civilian hostages ahead of female soldiers, four of whom were released recently.
Speculations surrounding Yehud's current whereabouts suggest she might be held by another faction, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The group’s representatives have indicated to media sources that Yehud is expected to be released within the week, potentially before the next Saturday, though no official confirmation has been made yet.
As the negotiations unfold, the safety and fate of those still held captive remain in focus against the backdrop of a fragile cease-fire.
