In brief

A criminal probe into Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister Karina over ties to the $Libra crypto venture was dropped by a federal judge on prosecutors’ request. The judge ruled that the events did not fall under a legal category and no criminal deception was proven. Milei had earlier warned that he was not involved in the development of the coin and claimed he acted in good faith when its value rose and then crashed. The case was originally prompted by a post Milei shared on X that helped the token’s price soar before he deleted it. Officials say the anti‑corruption office will still review whether the president’s actions were improper.

A federal judge has dismissed a criminal inquiry that linked Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister Karina to the sudden rise and fall of the $Libra cryptocurrency. The decision was made at prosecutors’ request after reviewing the evidence presented in court.

Judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi ruled that the reported events did not meet a legal definition and that no criminal deception had been proven. He stated that the links between the president and the crypto venture did not amount to a criminal act.

Milei had previously defended himself by saying he merely shared information about the token on social media and acted in good faith. He added that when he learned more about the project he deleted the post before the token’s price crashed, losing investors’ money.

The case originally stemmed from Milei’s X post that promoted the new crypto coin, prompting opposition lawmakers to consider impeachment and online critics to accuse him of a “rug pull.” The presidential office maintains that Milei had no role in the coin’s development and that the Anti‑Corruption Office will determine if any improper conduct occurred.

While Milei has not yet responded to the news of the investigation being dropped, officials say the review of his actions will continue in other channels.
