In brief
With airspace closed, Ukraine's leaders are utilizing V.I.P. train services to accommodate high-profile visitors despite the length and discomfort of the journey.
In the backdrop of the enduring conflict between Russia and Ukraine, world leaders are increasingly opting for train travel to reach Kyiv. This mode of transportation has become indispensable, particularly as civilian flights remain suspended due to security concerns. Dignitaries like Ursula von der Leyen, the European Union’s top official, have made the 10-hour overnight trek to Ukraine a routine occurrence since the war commenced nearly three years ago. Von der Leyen has completed eight visits to Ukraine since early 2022, and during these lengthy journeys, she finds herself preparing for meetings and reflecting on Ukraine’s plight. Her comments reveal a camaraderie with other leaders like Antony J. Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, who has also endured these taxing train rides. “When I see the tired eyes, I know he had a bad night of sleep with the tuk-a-tuk-a-tuk-a-tuk on the tracks,” she remarked of Blinken’s experience during his trip to Kyiv last September. To cater to high-profile visitors, Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ukrainian national railway, has implemented an elite service featuring VIP cars. These specialized compartments offer private sleeping quarters, comfortable lounges for discussions, and even kitchens where dedicated staff prepare meals for the traveling dignitaries. This travel experience, while long and challenging, provides world leaders an opportunity to connect with Ukraine’s leadership during critical times. As they endure the rigors of the train rides, each visit reinforces the international community's support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the war.
