Dandy Krazy, a prominent figure in the Zambian music scene, has tragically died from injuries sustained in a road accident on New Year’s Eve. The 47-year-old artist, whose real name was Wesley Chibambo, was involved in a collision in the Kapiri Mposhi region, which also claimed the lives of two others at the scene. Despite being rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for emergency surgery, he succumbed to his injuries early Thursday.
Among those mourning his untimely passing is President Hakainde Hichilema, who described Dandy Krazy as an "extraordinary artist." In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, the President remarked that the musician's work "touched lives far and wide, crossing all boundaries and bringing people together."
In an emotional tribute, his daughter Comfort wrote, "Daddy you have answered the Lord's call on Shanice's birthday, your third born. Even in death, we will always love you Papa." She expressed her pain while acknowledging her acceptance of God's will.
Dandy Krazy was celebrated not only for his music but also for his ability to provide social and political commentary. His song "Donchi Kubeba," which translates to "Don't Tell Them," played a significant role in the 2011 elections, contributing to the Patriotic Front party's victory and the end of a 20-year rule by the Movement for Multiparty Democracy. His contributions to the music industry earned him the Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom from former President Michael Sata.
Politician and lawyer Sakwiba Sikota also paid tribute to Dandy Krazy, highlighting his profound impact on Zambia's music landscape and comparing his influence to music legends like Bob Marley and Nina Simone. In response to the tragedy, the government has pledged assistance with funeral costs for Dandy Krazy and other victims of the collision.
