After lengthy negotiations, the funeral arrangements for Zambia's late ex-president Edgar Lungu have been confirmed, permitting current President Hakainde Hichilema to participate.
The body of the late president will be transported to Lusaka, the Zambian capital, on Wednesday via a private charter. Upon its arrival, full military honors will be paid, after which it will be taken to Lungu's residence in Lusaka. The public will have the opportunity to pay their final respects at a conference center starting from Thursday. A state funeral will take place on June 22, followed by burial on the subsequent Monday, with the exact burial site still undecided.
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu expressed regret for any distress caused during the negotiations, reaffirming their commitment to honoring Lungu's wishes. Government representative Patrick Kangwa encouraged unity among Zambians during this challenging period. Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, remained a significant figure in politics even after his electoral defeat in 2021. Despite being barred from a political comeback, he remained vocal in his criticism of the current administration.
