Zambian Ex-President Edgar Lungu's Final Resting Place Sparks Controversy

Family chooses South Africa for burial amid government dispute over funeral arrangements.

The burial of Zambia's former president Edgar Lungu has ignited a fierce dispute between his family and the government, ultimately resulting in a decision to inter him in South Africa.

The family of late Zambian President Edgar Lungu has announced plans for his burial in South Africa, following a disagreement with the Zambian government regarding the funeral's logistics. Initially, President Hakainde Hichilema had intended for Lungu's body to be returned for a state funeral in Lusaka, set for Sunday. However, Lungu's family has opted for a private ceremony in Johannesburg instead.

In a statement, family spokesperson Makebi Zulu confirmed that the funeral would be held in South Africa, citing the family's desire for a dignified and peaceful tribute. This marks a significant moment as Lungu becomes the first former head of state from another country to be laid to rest in South Africa.

The tension culminated when Lungu’s family expressed their desire to keep the funeral private, notably refusing to allow Hichilema, Lungu’s longtime political rival, to attend. Despite a preliminary agreement for a state funeral, relationships soured over the specifics of the arrangements.

President Hichilema publicly emphasized that Lungu, as a former president, should be honored and buried in Zambia. However, he was forced to terminate the national mourning period early, citing the need for the country to move forward. He expressed disappointment, noting the government's commitment to honor Lungu appropriately had not been met.

Lungu's death earlier this month, attributed to health complications while in South Africa, has left a notable void in Zambian politics. His leadership from 2015 to 2021 saw him as a prominent figure, although he was defeated in his re-election bid. Since then, he had wrestled with the limitations imposed by the Zambian Constitution on his eligibility for future presidential runs.

His passing and the subsequent funeral debate have drawn reactions from various sectors, including civil society and religious leaders, calling for resolution and unity amid the controversy. The opposition party, Patriotic Front, which Lungu led, has voiced support for the family, deeming the government's handling of the situation inappropriate.

As the family prepares to announce the exact date of the burial in Johannesburg, the situation has sparked a dialogue about national dignity, governance, and the respect due to former leaders in Zambia.
