BBC's Mark Lowen Deported from Turkey Amid Rising Tensions

BBC reporter Mark Lowen has been forcibly removed from Turkey after being detained during protests in Istanbul.

Mark Lowen, the BBC's correspondent, faced detention and subsequent deportation while covering significant protests ignited by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, accused of corruption amid claims of political motives.

In a dramatic turn of events, BBC correspondent Mark Lowen was deported from Turkey on Thursday after being arrested the day prior in Istanbul. The BBC confirmed that Lowen was taken from his hotel for 17 hours of detention before authorities issued a notice claiming he was a "threat to public order." His deportation coincided with ongoing protests against the controversial arrest of Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a vocal opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Imamoglu, who has denied any wrongdoing, is widely regarded as a potential presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

Expressing his distress over the situation, Lowen shared his dismay at being expelled from a country he had once called home for five years, emphasizing the importance of press freedom and impartial reporting. Deborah Turness, BBC's CEO of News, expressed concern over the incident, stating that no journalist should endure mistreatment for fulfilling their role. The Turkey director of Human Rights Watch, Emma Sinclair-Webb, voiced her outrage, warning that such actions threaten the freedom of the press and deter international media from covering sensitive stories in Turkey.

The backdrop of Lowen’s deportation includes mass protests across Turkey, where demonstrators have assembled against the Mayor's arrest, with claims of over 1,400 individuals detained. Although nightly protests have diminished, the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has organized a rally in Istanbul this upcoming Saturday, as tensions within the nation continue to rise amidst the government's crackdown on dissent.
