BEAUFORT, S.C. (RTW News) — A mass shooting at a busy bar on St. Helena Island has tragically resulted in four individuals losing their lives and at least 20 others injured.

The incident took place early Sunday morning at Willie’s Bar and Grill. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies discovered a chaotic scene, with numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to a statement from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office on social media, many individuals fled to nearby businesses for safety amid the gunfire.

Authorities confirmed that four victims were pronounced dead at the location, and at least 20 additional patrons sustained injuries. Of those injured, four people are reported to be in critical condition.

The establishment is owned by Willie Turral Food Services. Turral stated that a Battery Creek High School alumni event was taking place at the bar when the shooting broke out.

The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

Local U.S. Representative Nancy Mace expressed her sorrow via social media, stating she is COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County, and offered prayers for the victims and their families.

St. Helena Island is part of the larger Gullah community, home to descendants of enslaved individuals who worked in the region and have retained their unique cultural heritage due to geographical isolation.
