MONTGOMERY, Ala. (RTW News) — In the wake of a mass shooting that took place in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, resulting in two fatalities and over twelve individuals injured, Governor Kay Ivey has pledged to enhance public safety measures in the area.

The shooting occurred on Saturday at approximately 11:30 p.m., in a bustling part of downtown known for its nightlife, which includes bars and restaurants. The area is located near important historical landmarks, such as the Alabama Capitol and sites dedicated to civil rights icons.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys indicated that although one victim was specifically targeted, a chaotic scene ensued as other individuals began firing weapons. Notably, seven of the fourteen shooting victims were under the age of 20.

In response, Governor Ivey is exploring various safety options, including the expansion of patrol areas for Capitol troopers to cover significant parts of downtown Montgomery. She is also advocating for legislative support to secure more resources for local law enforcement.

Let me be clear: All available state assets are being discussed, and ALL options remain on the table, stated Ivey in a written statement. Montgomery is a special place filled with history, great potential, and a strong community of people.

However, the Governor's remarks coincide with a growing discourse on the role of gun control. Mayor Reed highlighted how Alabama's recent law, which removed the requirement for a concealed carry permit, has undermined law enforcement's ability to ensure safety. He argued for the need to address the overarching gun culture that affects the community.

As of Monday morning, authorities had made no arrests related to the shooting, raising concerns about public safety in the area.

Reed emphasized, We welcome any assistance the state is willing to provide. But real safety requires more than additional troopers or task forces — it requires the courage to confront the culture of easy access to guns and a lack of responsibility among those who carry them.
