Protests Erupt in Bangladesh After Eight-Year-Old Rape Victim Dies
Nationwide demonstrations demand justice and legal reforms following the tragic death of a young girl victimized by sexual violence.
An eight-year-old rape victim has sadly died in Bangladesh, leading to widespread protests and calls for stringent reforms regarding women's and children's safety laws. The child was reportedly raped while visiting her elder sister's house in Magura on the night of March 5. Following her death on Thursday afternoon due to multiple cardiac arrests, riots broke out, with demonstrators setting the alleged perpetrator's house ablaze.
The girl had been hospitalized in critical condition at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka since March 8, where treatment failed to save her. Her mother expressed despair, stating she had hoped for her daughter’s survival. In a significant display of public unrest, thousands gathered for the girl's funeral in Magura, with many calling for expeditious justice for victims of rape and a legal overhaul to better protect women and children.
Protests also spread to Dhaka University, where students held a mock coffin to honor the child and voiced their demands for clearer legal definitions regarding rape. Activists emphasized the urgency of reforming laws, especially in light of the alarming number of child rapes reported in Bangladesh, with an estimated 3,438 cases logged over the past eight years.
Legal expert Asif Nazrul outlined that DNA evidence has been collected, and authorities hope to initiate the trial within the week. Under existing laws, raping minors can incur a death penalty, a measure introduced in 2020 in response to rising sexual violence cases, including horrific gang assaults.
In the week following the young girl's rape, reports surfaced of at least three other child victims in different regions of the country, highlighting an ongoing crisis that authorities must urgently address.
