In brief

In a post on X, Vice President JD Vance blamed the Iran war for the GOP’s midterm losses, noting that poll data indicated Trump voters prioritized ending the conflict. Vance called for a “plain‑spoken” analysis of the war’s cost to Republican control of Congress. Trump responded by defending the war as a justified action, repeating that he would do it again. The debate highlights growing friction within the Republican ranks over the proxy war in Tehran.

Vice President JD Vance has attributed the GOP’s disastrous 2026 midterm losses to the Iran war, stating that the conflict was not worth ceding control of the U.S. Congress to Democrats. He made the claim in a lengthy post on X on November 2, 2026, after the party’s results were announced.

In the post, Vance wrote, “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so.”

He continued that a pollster he described as “one of the smartest people I know” had told him that among Americans who voted for Trump in 2024 but were leaning Democrats in 2026, the top four answers were ending the Iran war and changing the U.S. relationship with Israel. That poll data, however, has not been released independently and remains unverified by other outlets.

Trump has spoken publicly in defense of the war. In the wake of the rebuke, he told the Wall Street Journal, “I did the right thing. I would have [done it again],” asserting that the conflict was justified and that he would repeat it if necessary.
