A device containing unexploded ordnance detonated in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktia province on Friday, killing a child and injuring four others, a local police official said on Saturday.
The blast occurred in the Shapoli area of Dand Patan district, where children had found the device and began playing with it before it exploded, the official reported.
Munib Zadran, the provincial police spokesman, said:
the children found the device and began playing with it, but the device exploded, killing one child on the spot and injuring four others.
Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most heavily contaminated countries with landmines and unexploded ordnance, a deadly legacy of more than four decades of successive wars and internal strife.
