A collision between a Renfe high‑speed train and a stationary Iryo carriage near Urda in Toledo province, on the Madrid‑Seville line, took place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, killing at least 68 people and injuring around 80 passengers.

Al Jazeera and the United Press International reported that the incident derailed two carriages and caused the deaths of 68 people while 80 passengers were injured, about 50 seriously and 15 critically. Spanish authorities said the trains were carrying more than 500 passengers.

South Korea’s foreign ministry, according to Yonhap, confirmed that 11 South Korean passengers were aboard the trains, and two of them were injured. One sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital after treatment; the other remains hospitalized. The ministry said it was monitoring the situation closely.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stood at the crash site and said, “Spain is in mourning.”

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said a computer failure at the rail‑control center allowed the following Renfe train to depart despite a red signal, a decision the minister called “inexplicable.” Investigation is ongoing into possible signalling failures and systemic errors, with authorities still determining the exact cause of the collision.

UAE and Saudi leaders have released condolences to King Felipe VI, and the UAE president has wished a speedy recovery to the injured, underscoring the international response to the tragedy.
