The Serdica Gallery in Sofia opened its doors on November 3 to showcase "Layers," a 26‑piece textile exhibition by Bulgarian artist Valka Parusheva that explores how accumulated layers shape human consciousness and emotion.

Each work in "Layers" is constructed from a specific textile fabric in which individual threads appear as pixel‑like details up close; from a distance, translucent colour fields emerge, blending together to reflect the layered nature Parusheva seeks to convey. The blend of materials, colours and geometric shapes aims to balance minimalism with compositional complexity.

Parusheva told BTA, “I would like this exhibition to convey a sense of warm human presence and offer a purely aesthetic experience.”

Born in 1969 in Sliven, the artist earned a degree in artistic textiles from the Dimitar Dobrovich School of Applied Arts in 1988. Her career has spanned contemporary art, textiles and graphic design, and she has participated in national group exhibitions since 1991, held seven solo shows, and received numerous awards including the UBA textile art award in 2026.

The exhibition runs through November 21, giving visitors a window into the layered visual and emotional textures that define Parusheva’s work. The Serdica Gallery remains open to guests and offers a quiet setting to experience the subtle interplay of thread, colour and form.
