In brief

A vessel off Lompoul Beach ran aground, prompting the recovery of around 20 bodies by Senegalese gendarmes and firefighters. While the authorities confirmed the location and the fact of the bodies' recovery, details on the number of passengers and why the boat grounded remain unverified. A conflicting Instagram report claims 109 bodies and 80 survivors, adding ambiguity to the incident’s true toll.

A boat that ran aground off the coast of northern Senegal has resulted in the recovery of about 20 bodies, the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) said on Saturday, following a report that the vessel had run aground the day before.

The bodies were recovered along the coast near Tebene, in the Potou Saradao area of Kebemer department, where gendarmes and firefighters collected them and transported them for identification.

The incident’s circumstances remain unclear, including how many people were aboard the boat and why it grounded. No official explanation has been released.

Contrary to the initial count of 20 bodies, an Instagram reel circulating at the time claims that 109 bodies were recovered, with 52 men, 42 women, and 15 children, and that more than 80 people survived. No corroboration of this figure has been provided by government sources.

Both the APS report and the Instagram source highlight a grave situation, but only the former is confirmed by a national press agency; the body count and survivor numbers from the reel remain unverified.
