On November 8, 2026, the Black Star Fashion Week concluded on the presidential runway in Akosombo, Ghana’s Eastern Region, drawing designers, traditional rulers, government officials and international partners to discuss growth and exposure in the global fashion market.
The event highlighted Ghanaian cultural heritage, music, dance and eye‑catching designs, with models walking the runway to display the creativity and talent of the country’s top designers.
Rex Owusu Marfo, coordinator of the Black Star Experience Secretariat, said:
We have come to Akosombo deliberately. Our vision is simple yet very powerful. We are not in the conventional city hall; instead, we are in this serene, well‑resourced area to showcase the beauty of Ghana beyond our capitals and to position Akosombo as a premium tourist destination.
Designer George Tetteh noted his work’s inspiration and called for broader effort:
A lot of things go into a creative process, but predominantly it is our heritage, our culture, and then also fashion trends and everything that comes together for a creative to make a collection. Ghana has to make it an intentional effort and investment and then also create avenues like this for us to be able to show our work.
Another designer, Titus Nartey Doku, spoke on transforming used clothes into trending designs:
It’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and then it can be done. We need to go to our own local textile industry. We need the media, and we need buyers. We need the government involved in trying to push the designers out there, outside the shores of Ghana.
Speakers during the evening urged greater investment and support for local designers and for the regional tourism industry, aiming to raise Ghana’s profile on the worldwide stage.
The organizers emphasized that hosting the fashion week in Akosombo would promote the area as a premium tourist destination while showcasing the country’s cultural richness and creative potential.
The event’s closing remarks highlighted both the celebration of Ghana’s heritage and the call for collective action to bring local fashion to international markets.
