In brief

The Arab League has demanded a worldwide independent inquiry into alleged torture of Gaza prisoners at Israel’s Ramla Prison, citing injuries sustained by detainees in the Rakevet section. The organization seeks unrestricted access for the International Committee of the Red Cross, medical treatment for the wounded and the immediate release of sick detainees, labeling the acts as violations of international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office reports that the prisoners were repeatedly assaulted with batons, tear gas and other means, and that between 9,350 and 9,400 Palestinians were held in Israeli jails as of October 2026.

The Arab League on Sunday urged an independent international investigation into alleged torture and systematic abuse of Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip held at Israel’s Ramla Prison, where detainees in the Rakevet section have reportedly suffered injuries and burns from repeated acts of repression.

The statement called for the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent monitoring bodies to be granted unrestricted access to the prison, and demanded medical care for injured detainees as well as the immediate release of sick and wounded prisoners. The Arab League said the alleged abuses violated international humanitarian law and called them “crimes against humanity” that require accountability.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, Gaza detainees in the Rakevet section were subjected to repeated assaults, including beatings with batons, tear gas and pepper spray, rubber bullets and stun grenades. The office’s report further notes that between 9,350 and 9,400 Palestinian prisoners and detainees were held in Israeli jails as of October 2026.

While the Arab League’s statement and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office’s report confirm the allegations of abuse, confirmation of the specific acts from independent sources has yet to emerge, and the Israeli authorities have not issued a response.
