Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train.

Manninger made 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and FA Cup during his time at the club.

He earned 33 caps for Austria, notably participating in Euro 2008 held in his home country.

Peter Schottel, sporting director of the Austrian Football Association, paid tribute to Manninger, stating, Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch. His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team. His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable.

Manninger began his professional career with Red Bull Salzburg and later played for numerous clubs across Europe, including Sienna, Juventus, Udinese, and Augsburg. He signed a short-term deal with Liverpool at the age of 39 in July 2016, although he did not make any appearances for the club.

While at Arsenal, Manninger often played as a backup to David Seaman but stepped in during an injury crisis and contributed significantly, including helping Arsenal to a memorable victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford during the 1997-98 season.

Manninger was also honored as the Premier League player of the month in March 1998.
