The pilots tragically killed in the collision at LaGuardia Airport were two eager Canadian men with aspirations of flight. Mackenzie Gunther and Antoine Forest were maneuvering their Air Canada jet when it collided with a fire truck.
While official identities are yet to be confirmed, family members and educational institutions have paid tribute to the industrious young men. Gunther, fresh from the Honors Bachelor of Aviation Technology program at Seneca Polytechnic, tragically began his career just months ago. Forest, known as a dedicated pilot, had worked for two airlines over the last five years, fostering a passion for aviation since childhood.
“These were two young men at the beginning of their journeys,” expressed FAA Administrator Brian Bedford. “Their loss is an enormous tragedy." Onboard the regional jet, about 40 of the approximately 70 passengers and crew were hospitalized, resulting in various degrees of injury, prompting an immediate investigation into the incident.
Antoine Forest was from Coteau-du-Lac in Québec, and his cousin recalled fond memories while condolences poured in from their community. Mackenzie Gunther's college lowered flags to half-staff in honor of their late student and colleague.
Witnesses describe a miraculous escape for many involved, as several credited the pilots' quick reflexes for minimizing further casualties during the catastrophic landing.
