Thai Teen Found in Suitcase Suffocates – Police Confirm Murder, 15-Year-Old Victim
Police in Pattaya have confirmed that 17‑year‑old Tunchanok Donhomla died from suffocation after her naked body was found in a suitcase near a railway track in the early hours of 27 June.
The girl was discovered 15 minutes after the arrest of 45‑year‑old Australian Simon Peter Carman, who was detained for allegedly preparing to flee the country. Tunchanok’s autopsy results revealed a death by suffocation, with a brain injury that the police stated was not the cause of death.
DNA analysis confirmed that the body carried Carman’s genetic material, suggesting he placed the victim in the suitcase before discarding it. The police have charged him with murder, concealment and moving the body, kidnapping a child over 15 but under 18, and removing a child for an indecent act.
Carman denied the charges, claiming self‑defence and alleging a payment dispute over sexual services. In a video while in custody, he appeared to issue a message of regret to the family, saying "I know you'll be very sad… same [as] me," before urging other girls to be careful.
Tunchanok’s family, who lives in Kalasin province, said the tragedy confirmed fears about the safety of teenage travelers. Her father, Thongchai Donhomla, expressed deep sadness, while her step‑mother, Oradee Bussarakum, urged authorities to take action against the suspect. If found guilty, Carman could face the death penalty.
Police are expected to present the case to prosecutors by Friday, as the indictment deadline is 18 September. The case has sparked intense discussion on online communities regarding the safety of foreign residents in Thailand and the potential for tragic outcomes when strangers are involved in illicit activities.
