In brief
A deadly airstrike by Israeli forces has claimed the lives of three journalists in Hasbaya, Lebanon, raising serious concerns regarding the safety of media personnel amidst the intensifying conflict with Hezbollah.
In the southern Lebanese village of Hasbaya, a peaceful haven turned battleground, an Israeli airstrike early Friday morning resulted in the tragic loss of three journalists and injuries to at least three others. These media professionals were staying in vacation bungalows that had served as a temporary base for reporters covering the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The airstrike occurred around 3 a.m., reportedly targeting a structure associated with Hezbollah. However, both Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Information Minister Ziad T. Makary condemned the attack as a blatant “war crime,” asserting it was an attempt to intimidate the media. Mikati expressed in a statement that this “deliberate aggression” was aimed at suppressing coverage of the ongoing violence and destruction. In its defense, the Israeli military issued a statement asserting that it had acted on intelligence, claiming to strike a military site that had been facilitating operations against them. “The strike was carried out while the terrorists were located inside the structure,” they claimed. As tensions rise, the international community is urging for a thorough investigation into the incident and calling for enhanced protections for journalists operating in conflict zones, highlighting the increasing dangers faced by those covering the war in both Gaza and Lebanon.
