A student has been arrested after a principal and a teacher were shot at a school in France on Monday morning.
The ninth‑grade pupil was taken into custody immediately after the incident at Lakanal middle school, according to mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari. French media said the suspect was 14 years old.
No students were harmed and the teachers received treatment for injuries that are not life‑threatening.
Sources say the assault was not linked to protests over school conditions that have been ongoing in the region.
Education minister Edouard Geffray posted on social media that the two staff members were victims of gunshot wounds and that a student was the alleged perpetrator. He said he would visit the scene with interior minister Laurent Nuñez on Monday afternoon.
The pupil reportedly entered the school with a gun, several shots were heard, and a staff member restrained him. The principal, 53, was shot in the leg and the teacher, 37, was hit in the thigh.
All students were immediately confined and made safe within seconds, the mayor added on social media.
