In brief
A reporter recounts their experience traveling on the renowned Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria, highlighting the stark contrasts between the luxury of the train and the struggles faced by local communities along the route.
As we approached a bustling train station in Cape Town, a scene of chaos unfolded before us, with informal porters navigating through the throngs of commuters and minibus taxis weaving through the crowd. Our car gradually made its way past a barbed-wire fence and halted at a sliding gate, where a security guard confirmed our destination, allowing entry to a realm of luxury.Upon arrival at the Blue Train’s drop-off point, we were greeted by two impeccably dressed butlers who welcomed us by name and whisked away our luggage. We were ushered into an exclusive waiting room that felt worlds apart from the bustling bus terminal nearby. There, we relaxed on plush sofas while enjoying a selection of delicacies and sparkling wine, accompanied by soothing piano melodies.Embarking on the iconic Blue Train was part of my venture into the heart of South Africa’s contrasting realities, where I could indulge in luxury and explore the country’s stunning scenery. This journey transforms what would typically be a two-hour flight from Cape Town to Pretoria into a two-night, 994-mile adventure filled with elegance and breathtaking views. The Blue Train, steeped in history, offers an exclusive experience, fully immersing passengers into a separate world, untouched by the harsh realities visible just outside its purview. Upon descent, the poverty struck me—the tin shacks visible from the plane, the homeless individuals seeking assistance, and tents dotted around the city juxtaposed with the opulent constructions nearby.
