Poland Unveils Europe’s Tallest Virgin Mary Statue
In the quiet village of Konotopie, a 55.6‑metre concrete statue of the Virgin Mary rose above the fields, becoming the continent’s tallest religious monument.
The statue, taller than Rio de Janeiro’s renowned Christ the Redeemer, was consecrated by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The unveiling ceremony featured helicopters circling the site to drop rose petals, while the statue itself stood crowned and hands open in a gesture of welcoming.
A notable attendee was Lech Wałęsa, the former president who once led Poland’s move away from communism; he reportedly wears a Virgin Mary pin and cited faith in his struggle.
The project was commissioned by a local millionaire couple and, though located miles from major urban centres, symbolizes a renewed, if subtle, Catholic presence amid a society where younger Poles increasingly turn away from church traditions.
The statue’s grand height and remote placement invite viewers to look beyond the everyday and consider the enduring role of faith in public life.
