The son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested by police on suspicion of assault, just before he is set to go on trial in Oslo on 38 charges, including the rape of four women. Marius Borg Høiby, who is 29, was remanded in custody for four weeks after authorities stated that his alleged offenses involved wielding a knife and violating a restraining order, with police indicating a risk of reoffending.
This latest arrest marks the fourth time Høiby has been taken into custody since August 2024, when he faced accusations of assaulting a woman he had been involved with. While he denies the gravest charges against him, Høiby has accepted some lesser accusations.
This incident adds to the turmoil surrounding the Norwegian royal family, as public attention shifts toward Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who has also faced scrutiny for having corresponded with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014. Following these revelations, Mette-Marit expressed regret for her 'poor judgement' and showed solidarity with Epstein's victims.
Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has also weighed in, supporting the princess's acknowledgment of her missteps. Questions are now arising regarding the role of Mette-Marit’s advisers in handling her contacts with Epstein and the implications of her behavior on the royal image.
Mette-Marit, who has a notable role in society as the future queen of Norway and a patron of several organizations, is also reportedly facing health challenges with pulmonary fibrosis, complicating the royal family's situation amid these ongoing issues.
