Mangione Pleads Guilt in High‑Profile Manhattan Murder Trial

After a tense, media‑filled hearing in Manhattan, 28‑year‑old Luigi Mangione admitted he fired the shot that killed UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson on 4 December 2024.

The federal courtroom was packed with reporters, supporters, and members of Thompson’s family, all watching as Mangione stood before Judge Margaret Garnett, his hands bound behind his back and shackled feet.

“Mr. Mangione is prepared to plead guilty at this time,” Karen Friedman Agnifilo told the judge. Mangione’s voice was hurried as he read his statement, but he stopped when he confirmed that he had indeed killed Thompson.

The court’s atmosphere shifted as a sobbing family member listened to the defendant’s admission for the first time, bringing a raw human element to the proceedings.

Prosecutors have recommended a 24‑30 year sentence for the two stalking charges, but Judge Garnett will decide the final term when she sits on the bench on 18 December. Mangione’s state‑level trial will begin in September.
