Mamdani‑Backed Candidates Sweep New York Democratic Primaries, Unseating Incumbents

US Congressman Dan Goldman’s defeat in the 10th district marks a clean sweep for candidates championed by New York’s Democratic Socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

Brad Lander, a progressive challenger, prevailed over Goldman with 65.7% of the votes to Goldman’s 34.1%. Lander’s campaign highlighted criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, a stance that resonated with voters despite Goldman’s support from pro‑Israel groups.

The mayor’s faction also captured two more seats. Assemblywoman Claire Valdez ousted Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the 7th District, while a doctoral student at Columbia, Darializa Avila Chevalier, unseated Adriano Espaillat—Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus—in the 13th District.

Mamdani praised Chevalier as “of clarity, of conscience and of conviction,” and expressed support for Lander’s vision of politics.

In the wider political context, the results highlight a left‑wing surge that may influence the November midterm elections. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries acknowledged the shift but warned that “a handful of primaries won in one direction or another won’t reshape who we are as House Democrats.”

The day’s outcomes also spotlighted the debate over the U.S. response to the Israel‑Gaza conflict, a key fault line that swayed voter sentiment and reshaped New York politics.
